I think its okay to have Native American mascot names as long as their not purposely trying to mock Natives. I see it as a school recognizing and admiring the Native Americans by choosing to use them as a symbol for their school. Bottom line is that I'm not Native American, so I personally don't know how they feel about it. If a school had a mascot and they called it a negro, as long as they are not mocking it and African Americans came up with it , then I wouldn't have a problem.
I see where you coming from about as long as its not mocking but they should have thought about that before hand. Now its somebody thats effended by it so they need to figure out something and fast.
I agree with you on this. As long as it was not intended to mock them than it should be okay. Also like you said, you aren't native american neither am I so I would not know how to feel either.
That is actually a good way to look at it. I never actually looked at it from that point of view. Maybe these school were still using these mascots as a tool for recognizing Native Americans.
No i dont think its cool. Because it can affend many people believe it or not. Say for instince that Argo was called the Argo Neegros instead of Argonauts. That would be so messed up and racist especially to African Americans. So I feel for the two teams that dont wanna play the other lacross team. Me personally i think that they should be forced to change the name into something else effective emmediatly. They use a name that relates to that town or the school.
I can see were you are coming from, with that train of thought but what it was intended to honor them. Why should they change the name? But that is just my opinion to be honest.
I agree people have different views on name some offensive the others not so much. It should be a name on their town a more meaningful name that can be friendly to people but menasing to their opponent.
Yes it is appropriate but to a certain extend. If they came up with the name I believe it would be acceptable or if it was not intended to offend them. They should not change the name because they then have to go to more work to change it, send it out to other schools so they know. Just leave it as is. They only reason to ever change it is if it was degrading to the Native Americans, but most of the names were not intended for that purpose, it was intended to honor them instead of degrading them.
Yes I agree, the mascot should be left alone. As long as nobody makes any inappropriate comments about Native Americans. It would just take more time to change the mascot snd have everybody notified that it has changed.
I think that it is definitely offensive and people can take it in the wrong way. I never looked at it like that but once somebody brings it to your attention, you notice that it is offensive and it can make a lot of people have hatred towards that sports team. I think that they should change it so it doesn't cause any conflict with people. They might not of meant it to be offensive to Native Americans but now that people are bringing it up, they should really think about changing it.
I agree to some people native Americans may mean a lot to them and can see it as in insult. It could be seen offensive to native Americans to see the mascot on how they think they look.
I agree to some people native Americans may mean a lot to them and can see it as in insult. It could be seen offensive to native Americans to see the mascot on how they think they look.
I agree. Some people can find something so small to mean something so big. There are so many different names and mascots that a team can choose, they don't have to pick someones culture.
What really puzzles me is a team has been called "the Redskins" for so long, and now. Now, in the 2010s is when people start calling it offensive. What? The Redskins of Washington won the world championship in 1982. Also in 1987 and 1991. You're telling me that in those days, on the biggest sports game of the year, the Super Bowl......NOBODY was saying "hey, I don't know much about sports, but this here Super Bowl team has a name that isn't right." Now I wasn't alive before 1991. I'm not sure if people were crying about the name back then even if it had nothing to do with them....but I don't live under a rock. Iv'e noticed that only recently, the term "Redskin" is "racist." Before I heard of this topic, I didn't care about that name. I didn't care what a team's name was. I thought it was boring, though. As a White Sox fan I grew up hating the Cleveland Indians. But I wouldn't say that out loud. And it's not because I'm fearful of being called a racist for saying "I hate the indians!" It's because MLB baseball is not THAT important to me. But if it were, and I totally despised that baseball team in Cleveland, it wouldn't matter to me what name they chose for their franchise.
I agree with Ryan and I think its stupid to change the "Redskin" name. The name has so much history and now all of a sudden they think the name is racist. They did not decide to call themselves the Redskins because the organization was racist.
I think it is okay with having a Native American mascot because the school is not making fun of them on purpose. I think the school might have a past about Native Americans. The school shouldn’t change their name I just really think they like that name and their mascot because maybe it describes them somehow. People are just over reacting about this racism. They just take everything personal and to the heart like it is poking fun at them specifically. They did not mean too it is just a name for a school and the school just really likes that name.
I disagree with Alexis because just because you don't find it offensive doesn't mean people from that culture don't. Everyone is different I think it's best to keep it as animals.
I agree with Alexis and think everybody is over reacting about these "racist" team names. They are not poking fun at Indians or making fun of them at all.
I disagree with Alexis he has a different view of the situation, because he is Latino and doesn't see it as offending as the Native Americans do.schools should just stick with animals and symbols as mascots.
I disagree with Alexis, their intentions may not be to poke fun of Native Americans, but they may still be offending them. They may not like the name since it offensive to their race and if it is I believe that the name should be changed.
Alexis I agree with you I also think it's okay on having a Native American mascot , they're not being disrespectful people admire Native Americans for what they did .
I disagree with your point of view Alexis because it might not poke fun of Native Americans, but maybe they can find it offensive. If the name doesn't go with the logo, the name should be changed and change it to a name that goes with their school logo.
I do not think it is ok to have a team named after a culture or religion. School names should be based off animals or symbols. This way nobody will get offended or take things personally. Another solution could be having a school board meeting and voting on the team mascot or name. This way everyone has a say in what it will be and can't complain. People are very different what one person might not seem offensive or harmless can offend someone severely. This is why I think it's best to vote
I see what you mean Abe because i feel the same and it can be disrespectful. And they cant just tell those people that's offended to just deal with it because its not right.
It’s not right to have schools mascots named after any religion or culture. Because it could insult people that are from that ethnicity, or other schools that have Native Americans, African Americans and Latino student athletes. Schools should have mascots named after animals, symbols or historical figures; they need to have a positive name that makes them look good against other schools. This way people could not get insulted, I think a good solution would be to have a meeting to vote and discuss what other appropriate mascot names are acceptable for the school and community.
I agree with you, that school mascots should be named by the school logo that they are representing because many people won't find it acceptable that there using a different name that doesn't go with the team mascot.
I believe that depending on how the name is being used it may or may not be acceptable. How you determine what is right and what is not can be difficult. The name redskins may be incredibly offensive to Native Americans and should be changed to show that we care. Even though a team may not be trying to be offensive it may cause some people to be upset and if it becomes a problem it should be changed. The logo of the team may also be offensive and may need to be changed as well. At the end of the day to some people it may be offensive to others it may not be, in my opinion the names should be changed to show respect to Native Americans.
I agree with you Manroop. Just because a person does not feel a logo or name is offensive, does not mean everybody does. To Native Americans this can be very offensive. Out of respect, mascots with Native American names should be changed.
I disagree a teams intentions may not be to be racist, but that does not mean it is not racist. If Native Americans were offended by the names than it should be changed.
I think Native American mascots in general are not naturally offensive. A Native American mascot doesn't "mock" Native Americans any more than a tiger mascot "mocks" animals; any more than a trojan mascot "mocks" the culture of Ancient Greece; any more than a hoosier mascot "mocks" those from Indiana. Notice anything in common with all these things? Teams choose nicknames of things that they respect, things that exhibit the traits that they want their athletic programs to embrace: Bravery, respect, admirability, courageousness, perseverance, wisdom, etc. Also Native American mascots should not be banned. The only thing that should be banned is negative stereotyping of Native Americans. There is nothing wrong with celebrating and honoring our country's history, and the first and only non-immigrant people in our country. If we banned Native American mascots it would be just another step towards forgetting our own history and shaping the over-sensitive nation we have become.
I strongly agree with you Omar. It's very true that Native American mascot doesn't mock any more than a tiger mascot mocks animals. I believe that it is nice to celebrate a cultural if their name is being represented as a good team mascot name.
I think its alright for a team to be called the Redskins or the Indians if it represents the logo of their school because if a school mascot is called the Redskins and if it goes with the logo of their school its fine but, lets say if their school logo is a ram and use the name the Redskins as their team mascot name then there will be a problem with that because many people are going to be confused of why they used that as a mascot name that doesn't go with the school logo and find it offensive. They should only use names that go with their school logo because if not, many people are going to find it racist and cause a big problem with everyone in the community.
The teams and managers probably have no intent to offend people and just want to keep tradition. I believe the names shouldn't offend anyone to that personal level. The name Redskins has been there forever, and it doesn't attack your well-being. Freedom of speech is a right every American has. If the KKK get to keep their organization name, and keep running I don't see why the Redskins can't be left alone. The team isn't harassing Native Americans, they're not promoting violence towards them, nor are they trying to undermine them as a race. It's a silly topic of discussion that has already been resolved before. The teams that refuse to play them have a school board and coaching staff full of hippies.
I strongly agreeing with your words of freedom of speech, this team shouldn't be forced to change their name because of two teams finding their mascot name racist.
I believe that it is not right to have Native American mascot names. Even though this is tradition, it is still racist. Slavery was tradition and always done, however people realized it was wrong and abolished it in the U.S. the names given might not be offensive to some, but to others it may be incredibly racist and offensive. As a Mexican, I would not want a Burbank team to be called the Burbank Beaners, just as I am guessing a Native American would not want a team to be called the Redskins. Teams should be forced to change their names, not right away, but with time all offensive names should be changed to be appropriate.
I believe that they should be forced to change their name. If it offends one school then it can offend others as well. Although the school did not see the offensive message they should at least let the name sink in and see where people are getting the insult from.Even if the school did not mean to offend any one they can still make a change for the better. Pretty sure the school would be respected by veriouse school because of the big and thoughtful change. I would not want to go to a school with a team called the Burbank Mexican or beaners , it will just make us seem like every one in the school is Mexican
In my opinion, many people may get offended by any mascot name that has to do with race, but there are certain a ways to make it offending or they can make it not offending by supporting that race and representing them, for example of a mascot name was "The Arab league" it wouldn't be offensive but if it was " The Arab bombers then it would be offensive. I don't think they should change the mascot name, unless any native Americans would step up and say that it offends them.
I believe that it's fine to have a native team mascot name from a foreign country if and only if it doesn't offend any culture or any type of religion. If a school were to change their mascot name to a native name I'd say that the school should have a meeting and talk about it very well and have a vote if it's okay to change it to whatever name they are getting new! For an example, if Reavis were to change their names into the Aztec Rams or Mayan Rams I'd say that would be fine, my opinion. Some people might take it offensive but who knows? Now if they were to change their team name into something like the Wetback Rams or for like the cross country team getting their team name changed into the Border Crosser or something that offends a culture that shouldn't be accepted. It all depends on how the Native Mascot name is being represented!
To a certain extent there must be certain limitation when it comes to a sensitive subject such a racism. Most of these schools that have a mascot that represents a certain religion, ethnic background, or nationality were built almost a hundred years ago. Sadly, it is the 21st century but yet these school still haven't decided to remove these mascots that could be considered offensive to certain people. Mostly because most people don't know where these mascots originate from or because there aren't that many people of that particular nationality in that school.
I agree with you James! It all depends on how the person or its more then one person takes the mascots name! In this case what you said the Indians were tough and lived off the land, so I think its okay to call them Redskins to represent that toughness on them as you said.
I think it is offensive because some people may get offended. Even though some schools have mascots since a long time ago. I still think it is racist when they have a certain name for a mascot that has to do with culture, religion, or nationality. If they had another name for the school like Reavis Mexicans or some other name people would get furious. That's why I think its unfair and they should just change the name
If the team did not choose the name "Redskins" or "Indians" to poke fun at native americans, they shouldn't be penalized for it. They are not trying to aggravate any native americans, this was their teams name when the school formed so i believe they should not be forced to change their mascots name. You do not see any of the NFL teams denying to play against the Redskins because of their teams name, they put that aside and play the game they are meant to.
I think they should change the name and mascot. it is very socially unacceptable becaus if it was another race like African Americans or Asians it would have been taken care of a long time ago, but Native Americans have been forgotten. So terms like Redskins have been around so long it has become acceptable in society. I think it's only right that it be changed because every other racist term or slang has been unacceptable so why shouldn't this be addressed.
I don't see anything wrong with The Blackhawks because that was a tribe name. But The Redskins is derogatory. To me, saying someone is a Redskin can be offensive to certain groups of people. It's like you're not acknowledging their ethnicity. Like when people say Chinese people are yellow. That's racist and degrading. A Blackhawk is like a name given to a person out of respect and power. Native Americans actually worked for a name like that and it brung them up in society and their everyday life. So that shouldn't be considered inappropriate because it is not describing someone by their skin color, race, or ethnicity.
I think its okay to have Native American mascot names as long as their not purposely trying to mock Natives. I see it as a school recognizing and admiring the Native Americans by choosing to use them as a symbol for their school. Bottom line is that I'm not Native American, so I personally don't know how they feel about it. Deletei agree with Danielle because for instance Reavis was called "the Reavis latinos" i would be mad because they would be pocking fun on latin races.

You do not see any of the NFL teams denying to play against the Redskins because of their teams name, they put that aside and play the game they are meant to.
ReplyDeleteI think they should change the name and mascot. it is very socially unacceptable becaus if it was another race like African Americans or Asians it would have been taken care of a long time ago, but Native Americans have been forgotten. So terms like Redskins have been around so long it has become acceptable in society. I think it's only right that it be changed because every other racist term or slang has been unacceptable so why shouldn't this be addressed.
ReplyDeleteI don't see anything wrong with The Blackhawks because that was a tribe name.
