The punishments put fourth towards each teams weren't quite appropriate in my opinion. The punishments being, suspension for the rest of the tournament and paying a fee. In my opinion I feel a suspension of 1-3 games max is just, but paying the fee is just a bit absurd. The part I do agree with though is with the coaches and players taking a sportsmanship class. I do agree with that. So as for me I am on the fence with whether the punishment was appropriate or not. Yes, what they did was wrong but it is also wrong for them to get suspended for that long and pay a fee .
In my opinion I see the punishment good and bad. Good because they should be suspended from the tournament. What they did was not fight athletes should try to get along with each other not fight with each other. I agree that both coaches and players should take a sportsmanship class. The bad part is that they shouldnt pay a fee. They are acting like if they have never seen a brawl before. In my opinion the suspension from the tournament and the sportsmanship class is enough. The person incharge already took away the most important thing from the players so why make them suffer more and make them pay a fee.
I agree, the punishment was too severe. A sportsmanship class would have been good enough to teach the teams that what they did was wrong. Suspending the teams for the whole season is enough punishment and i believe they should not have been fined.
I agree with Alex even if they did have to go sportsmanship class. they shouldn't have to pay a fine. Unless the fight ended up with serious injuries the yes they should pay a fine.
The punishment that went towards both teams in my opinion wasn't that appropriate. One of the reasons why I think the punishment wasn't appropriate is because both teams have to pay a fee of $500 to the remaining teams they have to play against. No school should pay a fee of $500 just to play a game of basketball, especially to a school they didn't cause any harm in. But the punishments that I do believe are appropriate is the coaches and players have to take a sportsmanship class so nothing like this ever happens again, the other punishment is both teams being suspended up to 3 games. Hopefully, from all this both teams learned there lesson and make sure nothing like this ever happens again.
Jose I agree with you I think they shouldnt of gotten suspended for a brawl , fights always happen in sports especially hockey and they dont get punished for fighting , sometimes the refs even let them fight for a while.
I agree with you because paying money for a high school basketball team is to much. Plus some kids do not have jobs and they will have to take money out of their parents pockets for a dumb fight.
I agree with Jose, no school should pay a $ 500 dollar fine for a fight that didn't have point. it’s just high school basketball and doing this is just to much for both schools parents and student athletes to handle.
I agree that the teams should be punished for there actions but those punishments are to much. The whole team shouldent be suspended for a fight that started between 2 people only the people that started it should be suspended. it would be evil to suspend the whole basketball team that all its got is basketball and that have put so much work into what they've done. also paying a fee is ridiculous because the kids are not gonna learn a lesson from that because they are not gonna pay for it. I agree that they should take that sportsmanship class to learn how to behave as an athlete.
I disagree with Pablo you win as a team you lose as a team and you get punished as a team. Yes it is unfair that both the teams got punished for 2 people but they should know how to control their teammates
I believe the punishment was too severe. The boys made one mistake and now their whole season is canceled and state playoffs. I do not believe it is fair for the coaches and team members who did not fight. I believe they should have been suspended for a certain amount of games but not the whole season and state playoffs. The coaches had no control of what happened and should not be punished for it. They did not tell the boys to fight, the boys did it on their own. Coaches did their best they could to stop the fight and therefore should not be punished by actions of their players.
I disagree, it is the coach's responsibility to teach these kids that fighting is unacceptable. I do agree that the coach could not do anything about the fight when it started, but the kids should have been taught not to fight.
I have been to Indiana. I have a friend that goes to Hammond's public schools. I was part of a organization that would shape kids up like me to become valuable. They taught me things that I would've never learned in IL. I have seen the Indiana Pacers play. With that said, this kind of behavior is NOT acceptable and the punishments should be served. Those coaches that were allowing a fight on a basketball court are some BAD MEN. I don't care if it's an emotional game, if you can't control yourself, then either something has to be done about it, or you shouldn't be playing sports. Now I will agree, that damage done on Griffith's Anthony Murphy was terrifying, and Tim Echoes was either accidental with it or is the one to blame. But as it looked like in the video, those schools were blood-thirsty for a fight. What kind of country is this where the solution to a basketball rivalry is to rip each other's heads off? I say let them face the consequences. It is embarrassing, childish, and not safe.
I do not agree with Ryan, although they made a mistake does not mean they have to be punish that harsh. Maybe just a little punishment will do the trick for them to not fight again.
I think that punishments are good and bad. The reason because of that is because the boys shouldn't have got into a fight, its stupid to throw a punch just because you got mad. Throwing that punch just to hit the other guy, now you cant play in the State tournament and is on probation for the rest of this year and next year. The reason why I think the punishments are bad because they are a little over extreme. Just because they got into a fight they cant play until 2017. Overall I think the punishments are good because that is what happens when you act stupid, you get big punishments.
I do not think that the two schools deserve these kinds of punishments. They were just playing a game they love and they got emotional after that foul. The both teams wanted to win really badly. Also I do not know why the players need to take classes for sportsmanship if they just made one mistake on the court. Everyone makes mistakes and everyone needs a second chance to redeem themselves. I also guess that the $500 fine is bad because who will pay $500!!! To just play a game of basket if they worked hard to get on the team that is just unacceptable.
I disagree with Alexis these kids need to learn the difference between what is right and wrong. By receiving the punishment, they will be better prepared for the future confrontations.
I agree with you that the team was punished way too harshly for merely becoming emotional in a game that they love. No one got hurt, so it should not be too big of a deal.
I disagree with Alexis they should take a sportsmanship class to learn a lesson because clearly they don't know how to behave and if they don't take a sportsmanship class then this type of unsportsmanship is gonna keep on happening.
I believe that the punishment was acceptable. The suspension and the fine will teach the kids about sportsmanship and will make them better people in the long run. There season might be over, but these kids have a whole life in front of them and need to learn now rather than later. By learning from their mistakes, they will learn what sportsmanship is and why it is important. When you get frustrated fighting will never bring anything good. In my opinion the punishment given was completely acceptable. The punishment will teach the kids that there are other ways to solve a problem and will prevent them and others from making the same mistakes that they made.
I agree with Manroop, its better to learn from there mistakes now than later. What the boys did was not acceptable and they need to be punish for what they did wrong. Its true this will teach the kids to handle a situation in a different way next time.
I do not agree with Manroop. Yes they fought and should face some consequences but suspension and a sportsmanship class is enough. Also, I do not believe that the suspension should be for the rest of the season. It is not fair for the other players and coaches who did not fight.
What Manroop says makes sense but I still think that the punishment was a bit much. I do agree with how the program will make them better people in the long run, players should not fight in a game unless its a NHL game.
I disagree with what you have said. What the kids did was wrong, however no one got seriously hurt. The punishment should have been less severe, a person who commits petty theft is not charged as harshly as one who committed murder.
I do not agree with Manroop Singh because first of all the fine isn't gonna teach them anything sense the players are not the ones paying it. Also many of this players are just gonna play basketball during there highschool years and if you take a whole season off its just not fair.
I believe that the punishment given to Griffith and Hammond High School’s was good and bad. I think this because the IHSAA gave the both teams a sentence for their actions, to teach the coaching staff and student athletes about sportsmanship. In a way it was too much of a punishment for high school basketball! , their season was over and on top of that they had to pay a $500 fine to teams they left hanging, and both schools have to take behavior courses. I think this is absurd because this kind of punishment is not even given to world star leagues.
I agree that the punishment may be a bit to harsh and it could of been handled better but they are just kids and they have to understand that you cant fight during games.
I agree with Hector, well because it is a bit absurd that the schools have to pay a fine for the brawl. Like Hector said this kind of punishment isn't given to "world star leagues."
I don't think it's fair to punish every single person at Hammond Highschool or Grifitih for that matter. You are punishing every person that ever attended that school and others that aren't even on the team and you are punishing financially a school that doesn't have that many resources any way. If you're going to cancel the rest of the season, I'm still against that as it hurts innocent people along with the guilty, but to put a financial burden on the whole student body and the school for probably years to come in these economic times especially in Hammond of all places and Griffith.
I agree with Omar because not every single person on the team should get punished for someone else's error. The people who caused the brawl should get punished. If you look at the video over not all of the players were involved in the brawl. So why should everyone get punished, like Omar said.
I agree with Omar and Aldo on this one, I don’t think the other basketball players from both sides have to pay the same consequences as their teammates. Because it’s unfair for the people that weren't involved in the fight.
In my opinion the punishment was too severe, and shouldn't have been suspended until 2016 of course there has to be penalties for the students, and the players to be disqualified or the game to be stopped , but suspended for more than a year is too much of a penalty, fights happen all the time. On the other hand this could be a show, for all the other schools and other team sports to show that if you disobey the laws, you will be severely punished, and a lesson to them as well, because it isn't about fighting or violence it's about trying hard to be the best.
I disagree with you because if they did not get suspended they would not learn their lesson and another accident would occur in the future because kids would think that they can get away with it.
In my own opinion I believe that the punishments for the two schools were a bit severe. Yes they fought but everyone makes mistakes. I believe they deserve to face some consequences but nothing too extreme. A fee and suspension for the rest of the season is harsh for the schools. In my opinion I believe that the two schools should be suspended for most 1-3 games. I also believe that the sportsmanship class is a great idea. The teams will learn what they did wrong and hopefully proceed to play with sportsmanship.
I think that the punishments were a bit severe. If you gave them 1-3 game suspension they would still learn there lesson. But suspended for the rest of the session is a bit to much just getting into a fight.
Although fighting in sports is never a good thing and shows terrible sportsmanship and character. The punishment was a bit severe in my opinion. I would have understood a five game suspension or something, but a whole season is to much. Playing any sport in high school, you were taught that your teammates are your brothers/sisters and you will have their backs no matter what. Now the brawl was pretty extreme, but at the end of the day, they were doing what they have been taught to do.
Both the teams should have made better choices and not only think about the game. Not only did they give them self’s a bad name but also the school’s they represent. In my opinion I think both teams got what they deserve, being suspended and getting find will prevent a fight from happening in future games. The blame cannot be on just the kids, it’s up to the coach to not only teaching them how to play well but also to have good sportsmanship. So I’m ok with the coaches going to Teaching and Modeling Behavior classes or programs.
I think the punishment was well deserved because you have to realize that its just a game and kids should not be fighting the way they did. You cant get too emotional in sports or it'll cost you like it did to them. Their season may be over but they have to learn from their mistakes so something like this wont happen again. The coaches have to make the players more disciplined and show them good sportsmanship. The modeling behavior program definitely help the players and coaches never to make this mistake again.
JD, it might seem like they will learn from their mistakes. You might see it as "Oh, maybe next year they'll rebound and have an integrity themed season" This punishment sets a statement for high school basketball alone. It doesn't matter what the teams of Griffith or Hammond, their players aren't the only ones being disciplined. It's a matter of amends, statements from associations officials want to teach these basketball players the risks you take are not worth it always.
I feel the punishment that was given to these Indiana teams was extremely harsh for what they did. The boys were just heated up, as most people get in sports. Completely ending each of their seasons, with a $500 forfeiture fee for every away game, is crazy for merely getting into a fight. Boys will be boys, and the coach does not have very much control of the boys lashing out in anger at the other team. Forcing the coaches to attend team courses is unnecessary because he does not control the boy’s emotions. The probation is all I agree with because they should be watched over to make sure it doesn't happen again.
In my opinion, the punishment for both teams were necessary. The reason why is that the brawl could of have been avoided, instead of the fellow teammates hoping into the fight and making it worst they could of try and stopping the fight. After this punishment the future basketball teams will know to do the right thing and the situation like that will be avoided. The five hundred dollar fee is too much in my opinion because they are just kids and arguments happen all the time.
I some what disagree, imagine you playing a sport and all of a sudden you realize that one of your players are getting beat up on. Would you just stand there and be a bystander or will you help your teammate out. You suppose to be a team, you rise together and you fall together.
In all honesty I feel that punishment for fighting in a sport is a bit too far. Especially when it takes away from these kids opportunity to play the sport that they love. If you aren't passionate enough to fight over a sport then you shouldn't be playing that particular sport. Although I understand that most people will disagree with the idea that we should just allow people to fight and let that be it, that isn't what I am saying. I feel that that the crime doesn't fit the punishment. The crime should be punished not the person. Let the coaches and players understand what they did wasn't necessarily but also understand that the brawl wasn't as bad as people made it seem. Compare how sports were played 30 years ago. You had to be tougher not only physically but mentally as well. With that being said, all of these fines and punishments takes away from the feel of the game. Players are going to play, and if that means they are going to get a little rough then so be it. If its one thing I learned its that difficulty breeds excellence.
The fight between the schools Griffith and Hammond was pretty big and the rest of year suspension was justified. The only thing I don't agree with is the 500 dollar forfeiture fee they had to pay to the rest of the schools they faced. That was unfair to one school who had an extra game to play as well. They had to pay another 500 dollars more than the other school. The courses needed to be taken are silly as well. The players and coaches know just as well as any other person how to behave on that stage. Emotions shouldn't take part for an athlete during a game. This disrupts the environment and leads to punishment.
ArkadiuszGal, you and I are like brothas. We are besties. I've known you since I was 6. With that said, your opinion makes NO SENSE whatsoever. How are you gonna say that emotions shouldn't take part in a game? How can you think that a $500 fine is going to be too much for these schools to handle? These schools are putting more money into sports than anything else. Why do you think we eat the same crappy lunch in the cafeteria every day? Because Reavis is spending all it's money on the football, basketball, baseball teams than buying GOOD food for us to eat. It's business being business, I believe the ISHAA knew what they were doing, and with all due respect, your 2 cents is totally corrup and invalid

ReplyDeleteThe fight between the schools Griffith and Hammond was pretty big and the rest of year suspension was justified.
ReplyDeleteArkadiuszGal, you and I are like brothas.
