Write a
Letter to the Editor that would appear in a local or national newspaper arguing
a specific point in sports that needs to be changed. Think of some current
events and issues about which you feel strongly. It could be a letter talking
about students transferring schools for athletic reasons, steroids, time away from
school, or sports taking on too big a role in schools. Parental roles,
sportsmanship, officiating, may also be possible topics. Don't let me limit
you, however. Limit your letter to 150 words, so get to the point and have some
fun.

Sports Hero
Describe
your favorite player or your sport hero and why he/she is your hero. What qualities
or skills does he/she possess that leads you to admire them so much. Writer
John Tunis once said, "The heroes in my books are the losers." Do
your heroes always have to win or have you learned something from them when
they have not been successful? Is your sport hero that because of their
athletic prowess, successes, and skills or are they heroic because of the
values they show, their ability to overcome challenges, or their determination
against the odds. Talk about your sport hero in detail.

Winning
Talk
about the role of winning. Vince Lombardi said, "Winning Isn't Everything,
It's the Only Thing!" Is that true and if so, to what degree? Is is
possible to get more out of losing? What lessons can be gained from losing at
something? You see little league soccer teams not keeping score in an effort to
diminish the role of winning... is this right or wrong? There is cheating going
on every day (moving to other schools to win, using steriods, ineligible
players, etc.) in an effort to win. Is cheating ever justified in sport... if
so, when? What do you think about winning in sports?
