Winning

Talk about the role of winning. Vince Lombardi said, "Winning Isn't Everything, It's the Only Thing!" Is that true and if so, to what degree? Is is possible to get more out of losing? What lessons can be gained from losing at something? You see little league soccer teams not keeping score in an effort to diminish the role of winning... is this right or wrong? There is cheating going on every day (moving to other schools to win, using steriods, ineligible players, etc.) in an effort to win. Is cheating ever justified in sport... if so, when? What do you think about winning in sports?

  1. I think it all depends on the person honestly. Playing in sports and participating in different activities should be for the fun of it or the experience or the lessons you can learn. Don't get me wrong, nobody likes to lose, but you shouldn't let losing determine how the rest of your day or your week will go. People should take losing as something to learn from. You did something wrong or you did not play to your highest abilities or you just played a better player, so learn from it don't beat yourself up about it. To me winning and losing shouldn't be the most important thing during sports.

    1. I believe that your statemnet is true because it actually kind of really depends on you and the people around you. I think that you shouldn't let losing get to you and make you get depressed over something not worth it.

    2. Yes Kate I agree with you. I believe that a person should not cheat in a game. Cheating is never the answer in sports because when you cheat then it usually means you care more about the game than you actually think therefore, you should try harder at practices and actually pay attention to what your coach might say.

    3. I agree with you. By losing should, let you learn from your mistakes. And that's right how you said don't let losing affect on your day or make you depressed.

    4. I agree with you because when someone loses they end up fixing mistakes that he/she had done. So from those mistakes it will make them better players.

    5. I strongly agree with Katelyn because people are different. Some believe winning is everything, some can careless if they win and some just love to have fun. Winning is great but when you truly see the team come together is after a loss.

    6. I agree that the importance of winning depends on the person. Some people are satisfied with just playing a sport. Being out on the field with friends and participating is satisfying enough for some, but not all. Some people need to win in order to have a good time. I think it is a good trait to have. I love to win.

  2. I don't think winning is everything. I say that because if you start winning lets say, you kind of think that no one can stop you and that you're invisible. It is possible to get more out of lossing. Why do I say this is because you can get motivated to do better next time you start playing. The lesson that gaines can get out is that you can't always win in every single game you play. The role of that soccer league I think its right and wrong. I think that because you're teaching the little kids that you will never lose in a game or something else, and I think its right because you're teaching them to have fun. I believe that cheating might be justified in some games, but not all the time. Sometimes I think the coaches are paying the referees some money so they can win. For me in winning sports it kind of matters to me, but not as much as the coaches. I just go out there kick some butt and if we win WE WIN and if we lose then WE LOSE.

    1. I agree with you that winning isn't everything because then people start to act cocky and feel invincible. I also agree that the little soccer league is teaching kids to have fun not giving score but on the flip side, they aren't teaching them that they can't win a everything and should move on.

    2. I believe in what Luis and Kevin are saying that winning isn't everything and that the coaches should talk to the kids about sportsmanship and its importance.

  3. I believe winning isn't everything when it comes to sports. Everyone eventually loses but playing a sport shouldn't always be about winning. It's good to have that winning mindset, but it should also be about having a good time and a good experience playing on the team. Players can get more out of losing by learning their mistakes or learn from it and not be a sore loser. You can also learn to move on from loses and focus on the next games. I think the little league soccer team are doing right by teaching kids to just focus on having a good time and not the score but are also doing kind of wrong by not teaching kids that they can't always win but not dwell on it. I do think cheating is justified in sports sometimes and should be because it can give unfair advantages like steroids. To me, it's good to win but that's not as important than having fun.

    1. I do agree with you on this one Kevin. People do eventually lose to another team. I also agree what you have said about having the mindset of winning and just going out there to have fun.

    2. I agree that playing sports is about more than just winning, but I believe that if you aren't playing to compete and win then there is no point in playing. Although, not everybody gets to win but everyone should go out and play to win and create memories.

    3. I believe that Kevin is right, it's really not about winning. Its all about having fun with your hole team. Also, I agree that the little leagues soccer team is a good way for kids to have fun.

    4. I agree with you Kevin. It is awesome to win but it is not everything. From sports you learn to be competitive, have discipline, and determination. Those three things is what you need to have in the grown up world and that is what sports teach us.

  4. Winning isn't everything. Yes, I believe that winning is very important, but to a certain degree. For example, a student athlete should not lose focus on school just so they can become a better athlete and help their team win. I believe that winning all the time is not good for a team. If they believe they can win every game, they will stop trying in a game and wouldn't give as much effort as they usually do. Losing is a great learning experience for a team. It forces a team to focus on their flaws and what they are doing wrong, as well. I think it is good that little league soccer teams aren't focusing on the score. They are trying to make kids enjoy the sport. Cheating is justified in sports. Professional players always gets some type of punishment for taking illegal substances that make them a better player. I think that winning is a curse and a blessing. It is fun to always win games, but at the same time they can ruin relationships and a student athlete's future, too.

    1. I agree with your opinion on cheating. Cheating can end an athletes career if they are using any performance enhancement drugs. Losing can help you see where you or the team needs to perform better.

    2. Throughout your entire statement, I agree with everything, except your statement that you do not believe that winning al the time is good for a team. The reason I disagree with this is because I believe winning is one of the best parts of the game. Sometimes, there might be a case where a team slacking because of their winning streak but most times, its actually a motivation to go undefeated. Going undefeated is one of the most glorious experiences in sports and sometimes, losing shouldn't be an option.

      Delete
    3. I agree with your statement. However, I think that a team that believes they can win every game tries to accomplish that goal that they have set and try to go and have an undefeated season. Sometimes it doesn't happen which can also be good because I think that also losing can inspire a team to go out and play harder the next game.

    4. I agree with Anthony's statement, winning teaches you how hard you work and the outcome of that hard work. But if the team or a player is cheating that is defacing someone else hard work. Why cheat and make others hard work mean nothing? When losing a game from being cheated makes other teams want to cheat and you lose the real things you are suppose to learn from playing a sport.

  5. The matter of winning being everything to me is false. Winning is indeed a major part of playing sports. The ultimate goal in sports is to win, but it is not everything. Winning is not everything because although its good to win, it blinds many athletes into believing they are untouchable. Losing is just as important as winning because it gives athletes a reality check, letting them know that everyone is capable of losing no matter how good they may be. Sports are meant to teach character and responsibility, because of that, I believe that it is okay for a little league soccer team to not keep score. Sports are not always about winning, some do it for winning, some do it for exercise, and some do it for fun. But even with winning not being everything, cheating should be justified. When an athlete cheats its not only unsportmanship like but it also shows their true character and in my opinion, I believe that cheating is one of the worst characteristics a person can have. Overrall winning isnt the only thing that matter.

    1. I agree that losing gives players a reality check because nobody can't win at everything and that you tried your best. I also agree that the little soccer league shouldn't keep score and think your right about just letting them have fun at their age instead of winning or losing.

    2. I agree with your statement, Jasson. Winning is a huge part in sports, but it isn't everything. Losing is just as important as winning, because it forces you to perfect your flaws. I also agree that sports are meant to build character and responsibility. They aren't supposed to focus only on winning.

  6. I believe that loosing is more important because when you loose then you do not always expect to win. Also, when you never loose and only win then when you do loose you will be very sad and disappointed. Also, wining is not everything. Cheating is never the answer in sports because when you start to learn how to cheat then you will carry that with you and you will not know how to be honest. I think that it is good for you to loose a few games because it teaches you that you do not have to win in order to have fun. But, winning can be fun too just not to the point where you have to win every single game.

    1. I agree in a way that losing is important when it comes to sports but I don't necessarily agree that it is more important. I think that just like how winning every game can have a toll on someone's mindset so can losing every game or even just a handful. I think winning is important just as losing is important to sports.

      Delete
    2. I also do not completely agree that losing is more important. I feel that it is just as important to win as to lose. Winning will give you the strength and toughness to keep going, and losing will only make you work harder to achieve the goal you want achieve. However, I do agree that a team or individual should not win every single game. I also agree that cheating should not be the answer.

  7. I think it is okay to want to win to an extent. For example, I think it is okay to tell yourself that you will do your best and TRY to win. However, it is not okay to tell yourself that you WILL win every game. Sometimes it is better to lose, because it lets you learn from your mistakes and lets you think about what you can and could have done to do better. I also believe that if we eliminated the option of losing, it would make people less competitive and violent, but at the same time mad. Cheating is another thing that is okay to an extent. If the game is being played for fun, then cheating would not make a difference because the game does not count for anything. In my opinion winning is just a state of mind, that people want but do not need.

    1. In all honesty I don't think that cheating is ever okay. Honesty in sports I think is important but mainly because of tennis and you don't really have officials. I think that everyone should play fairly because even if you do cheat and win you're not really truly winning. You should win fair and square. Cheating doesn't help you with anything. If you lose be respectful about it don't try to cheat your way into winning because i find that so disrespectful.

    2. I agree with you Natalia to an extent. I do not agree that cheating should be ever be okay like Kate said. I think that winning and loosing are okay no matter what and winning every game can make a person cocky and then they will just always think that they will win. Do no get me wrong winning is fun and all but if thats all you expect to do is win then your honestly not having fun.

  8. Winning isn't everything . Winning does feel good it feels amazing to win but it is not everything. Sometimes you have to lose. Losing can sometimes help you prevail. People need to lose it makes you work harder to step up your game or practice so you can become better at what you lost in. If you win you don't want to lose by cheating. Your drive for winning should not make you want to cheat . Winning isn't everything sometimes you have to lose and if you win don't win by cheating.

    2. I agree with you. If you win be cheating, it won't be the same feeling as if you worked do hard and you won. Sometimes you should lose because if you keep winning, you are going to be cocky. And always people need to lose so they would work harder.

    3. I agree with you. Winning is a great feeling and all, but it's not everything. And losing always isn't a bad thing when you look at it from different perspectives. Guess you lose some, win some, but the outcome is always income. Not necessarily money wise but in other aspects.

  9. Winning isn't everything. I mean hell yeah who doesn't want to win every single damn game. Winning gives you a great feeling but then when you put that next to losing, it's even more emotional. Losing can teach athletes so many lessons not only in-game but even out in the real world. No one likes to lose but sometimes it's for the best. Personally, I think the game should be very competitive but fun too. Whereas most of the time it's just plain competitive. And I believe players shouldn't be taking substances to improve performance. You're just cheating yourself and instead of bettering yourself, you'll be worsening yourself in the long-run. And cheating is not fair, but most of the time you can't do anything about it, can you? So just play hard and work harder and have fun while being competitive the next time you're on the field or court or whatever the case.

    1. I agree that sports should be competitive and fun but the fun part in sports is how competitive it can get. To me more competitiveness equals more fun unless it goes to far where athletes begin to fight. Being able to compete and trying to win is what makes sports fun.

  10. Win or lose, all athletes should take something from every game they play. In other to win, you must first learn how to lose. Winning is usually associated with great athletes such as Jordan, Woods, Phelps, and many more. But all athletes who have been recognized for their winning careers know that losing is as important as winning. Winning in sports is a result from all the hard work given in practice. Losing in sports is a result of unpreparedness or not giving a full effort. I feel that all athletes take losing harder than winning, only to show that losing builds athletes more than winning does. Winning in the end, does build legends, legacies, and dynasties.

    1. I agree with your entire statement. I believe that losing is taken into account more than losing is. I also agree that winning created legends, but only because they know the losing part of the game. Michael Jordan has a famous quote stating all of his failures, yet that is why he succeeds. I agree completely with your statement.

    2. I agree with you but I think that losing doesn't always show that you were unprepared as a team or not giving full effort. Some games come down to the wire. It doesn't always mean you were unprepared, sometimes it just means that the opposing team executed their plays or calls better than your team.

    3. Yes, I think it is true that athletes can learn a lot more from a loss than they can from a win. However, I think it is very important to try to win every competition that you participate in. I also think that if an athlete doesn't try to learn anything from a loss, a mistake, or a failure, then it was really just a waste of time.

  11. I believe that winning and losing are important in professional sports. Professional players already learned how to win and lose. Kids should be taught to have fun while playing sports but they should also be taught in how to win and lose. Kids should also be taught in how to show good sportsmanship. Losing isn't really a bad thing because than the player or the team and see where they need to improve on our what to do next time to be a successful team. In sports there is always a winner and a loser. In sports cheating should be justified because players can use steroids or other drugs to make them play better.

  12. Everyone loves to win but winning is not everything. All athletes have lost some point in their career. Every game an athlete plays is a learning experience. Winning comes from learning experience, practices, mental toughness and the will to win. Every athlete loves the feeling of winning it makes them feel superior. Cheating should not be accepted in any way shape or form. Being ineligible or taking substances for performance is cheating. When cheating that is to me a sign mental weakness because the athlete will do anything to win. Instead of cheating why not work harder to win. Sometimes cheating is justified but in most cases it is under the table and does not get noticed. The officials should be on their toes and expect the worst.

  13. I believe that winning is important, but to a certain extent. For example, a town should be supporting it's high school football team, but it shouldn't abuse the players verbally and make them feel threatened the way Odessa did. Although winning is important, losing teaches a person many things they wouldn't know had they never felt the feeling of defeat. I also agree that winning has some positive benifets. For example, it may help improve a player's self esteem. For students athletes, being able to play may give them a reason to try harder in school. Both winning and losing can teach players important life lessons. That is why losing is just as important as winning is and shouldn't always be considered a negative.

  15. I think that winning is not everything. Sometimes, it is better to lose than to win because you may be doing something wrong and you can fix your mechanics. If you keep practicing you will only get better. Winning to me only decides how good your team can work together and who will or will not make it into the playoffs. Cheating goes on everyday but I think it shouldn't be tolerated. Teams should win by hard work and dedication.

    2. I agree that losing sometimes can be helpful on improving the way you play a particular sport. Losing will show all the mistakes that occur and it is your job to fix it. Winning is also the really of who worked harder during practice and showed it on the field.

  16. Winning isn't everything, its all about having fun. Sure some people might think that winning is everything. But those are the people that can't handle losing. They love the good feeling of doing something right. if you mess up on something you can always go back and improve. There is a lesson to be learned by this. For example, a football team losses every game and out of all those games they they played they fought as hard as they could. The team feels proud of them selves because they didn't cheat and they did what they could unlike the other team who cheated by injecting things into there body's. So its better to lose knowing you did better than the other team.

    1. I agree because winning isn't everything there is to sports as long as you enjoy the sport that you are playing. Yes I think every coach tries to cheat in every way there is, I believe that injecting steroids and other drugs are not right because if you do inject drugs like steriods it's makes want to win all the make and the day that you lose the game you get so mad, so I think that winning is not the only thing in sports, it's all about sportsmanship and trying to do whatever it take's to win no matter what at end you lose but the result is that you tried your hardest that's all that matter's, you still won in your heart and you will remmeber it for the rest of your life.

  18. Often coaches say "It's important for you guys to have fun out there." However, I believe that winning is fun. I've don't remember a time in my life that I smiled because I lost a game. I remember the tears after the Regional game against Sandburg. It wasn't fun. So yes, I believe winning is very important. I think that every time an athlete steps on the field, the court, every time he/she jumps into the pool, or steps on the track, they should want to win the event. As Donald Erickson often says, "Winning is a lot better than losing." However, I also think that it is important for an athlete to win fairly. Cheating your way into a victory is just morally wrong.

    1. I completely agreed with your statement, winning is fun and that losing is not. However, I really do not think that winning is the most important thing. Being a fan at your Regional game, you might have lost, but I think you all won as a team, because you all worked hard to get to where you were. Yes it may be nice to win, and it is horrible to lose, but someone needs to lose in order for someone to win. And the losing team should never put themselves down, but rather learn what they could have done to win.
