Ray Rice

In February, Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice was arrested for assaulting his fiancee, Janay.  Video captured him dragging Janay (now is wife) from an elevator after the two had been fighting.  The NFL suspended him for two games.  Recently, TMZ released additional video footage that shows Rice in the elevator knocking Janay out with a punch.  Many people feel the two game suspension from the NFL is too easy on Rice and the penalty should be much stiffer.  What do you think?

  1. I believe that the two game suspension he recieved is not enough. Any professional athlete or any person in the eye of the public should know better to do things like that. He should be held to the same standards as any other person but maybe even higher because of how many people look up to him and see him as their told model. It's like when Michael Vick got into trouble for dog fighting. He went to jail for two years and to me that is reasonable I guess. It is definitely more reasonable then only a two game suspension for beating your wife. I definitely think he should have a bigger punishment then just not being able to play in two games.

    1. I believes in what you wrote is true. I think that Ray could of gotten could of been a little bit more severe than just two games, I think he could of gotten at least a year or more and could of got some prison time to make him really sorry for what he did to his wife. I think he could of took care of the problem in a better way than hitting her, at the same time it made me think that he wasn't thinking throughly in what he was doing with his actions, there are times that people are very stressed and don't think what they are doing with their actions, I believe that's what had happened with but still he should of been able handle himself.

  3. I think that Ray Rice's career should of not got into his personal life, but he should of known that what would be his consequences , he is lucky that he got very little punishment, He could of got years in prison, I think that Ray sould of talked to his wife without hitting her and knocking her out. I believe that he could of solved the problem in various of ways instead of hitting her.Ray noticed that he made a huge mistake and he apoligized to her many times to win her back, if I was her I would forgive him. I believe that if he did it agian he will regret for the rest of his life.I think that Ray realized he can solve things in a better way than fighting, I think the consequences are easy for him. The officials made the law that if it happens to anybody else they would not play for six games instead of two, the law was made becasue of Ray's inccident.

    1. No, I believe the consequences were not easy. Work should not get involved in your personal life. People in relationships always have problems. Yes, I do agree Ray should've not done what he did. But, us humans aren't Angels to not make mistakes. Like for example if you get into a fight in school, and you get suspended. Does your job have the right to fire u. No, your job does not have the right to fire you.

    2. Yes, Ray Rice did in fact got very little punishment but even though he did get lucky, most of us believe that his punishment should have been longer and he should have gone to jail for a very long time because he had lade hands on someone. If you were actually that woman would you really take him back. Just imagine if it happened agent, he wouldn't care he could always fined some one else. No woman deserves to be treated like that.

  5. I disagree with NFL's decision of suspending Ray Rice to only two games. I think that is not nearly enough punishment he deserved for his actions. Beating your wife who everyone saw should have gotten him maybe some jail time and a longer suspension. Even if he is a football player, he should still get the same consequences as someone else. To me, the NFL should have taken it more seriously and he should have known better being an athlete which was very uncalled for. The decision made by the NFL should have been longer than just two games.

    1. I think you're right where you said he should have gotten some jail time. Only because he is a professional football player does not mean he is super human or above the law. We are all equal and if it was someone else that wasn't a professional football player he would get jail time for the things that rice did to his wife. Its almost unfair to the rest of the people that did go to jail for domestic violence because they gave Rice special treatment only because hes a professional.

    2. I also agree with you Kevin and Walter. He should of gotten some jail time for beating his wife, I mean come on she's a female and you're a male those are two different things. But what I also don't get is why didn't he just hold her arms and instead of knocking her out. Also I believe what Walter said is right about Ray Rice just because he's a pro football player doesn't mean he's special.

    3. I totally agree with all three of you! Ray Rice should receive a bigger consequence for beating his wife like come on 2 games is like slapping someone on the wrist. Rice is in the public eye and since he got off easy many people are going to think, "oh its ok to beat my wife" but it is not. He was a role model to kids and they are gonna think it is okay as well but doing something as gruesome as that he deserves more of a punishment.

    4. I strongly agree with all of you. Azizah made a few really good points like when she said, "Ray Rice is in the eye of the public and since he got off easy people are going to think that it's okay to hit your wife". When in reality, it definitely is not something you should do.

  6. While your at work, you are working. At work someone should really work hard, and try to become the best. What ever you do outside of work, shouldn't matter. The NFL suspended Ray rice For hitting his girlfriend. First his girlfriend tried to hit him first. A month later after the incident they got married. That should've solved everything, between Ray Rice and the NFL.

    1. I completely disagree. Your personal life could always continue into your work. For instance, if you are caught drinking under the age of 21, you can still receive consequences from your school. Professional sports work the same. The NFL had every right to suspend Rice. I also disagree when you say "his girlfriend tried to hit him first." Ray Rice is a 212 pound running back in the NFL. He is three times bigger than his wife. There is no way that what he did could be considered "self defense," because his wife would not have left a single mark on him. He could have simply grabbed her or pushed her away. Ray Rice was unable to control his anger, and he knocked out his former girlfriend with one swift punch. For that, he deserved to be punished.

      Delete
    2. I strongly disagree, when in the public eye your personal and professional life intertwine because all eyes are on you all the time you are a remodel for the public. Just because they got married does not mean problem is solved. I personally think people do deserve second chances but after they have served a punishment. Ray Rice should walk away with one if not the public is gonna think it is ok to knock out your girlfriend.

      Delete
    3. I strongly disagree with your statement. Ray Rice has beaten someone who is weaker than he is. Domestic violence is a felony. If you did this while you were working for another job, and your employer finds out, you would obviously get fired. Rice is very fortunate that he is only suspended and not banned from the NFL

  7. I feel like the two game suspension that Ray Rice received was not harsh enough. Players are being suspended for much longer periods of time for petty crimes. Josh Gordon for example, is suspended for the entire year for using marijuana. You shouldn't have a two game suspension for assaulting someone when somebody else is missing out on an entire season for doing something that didn't hurt anybody. However, Ray Rice has recently been cut the Ravens and suspended indefinitely by NFL. I think that ruining his career like that is too harsh especially considering that Rice and his then fiancee ended up getting married. He received his suspension and should't have to get extra punishment just because footage from inside the elevator was released.

    1. I agree with you that the NFL was not harsh enough at first with the two game suspension and that the NFL shouldn't have made it worse just because the actual footage of Ray Rice hitting his wife leaked. In the end Ray and his fiancé ended up getting married and everything was settled between them the NFL should nor have ruined his career by suspending him indefinitely.

  8. I think that the penalty that Ray Rice received from the NFL was way too soft. If anything, I believe that he should have been suspended at least 8 games for what he has done. There was no excuse to knock out a woman cold heartedly like he did. Many people, including kids, look up to these players, and I believe that they should serve as a role model to them. Josh Gordon was suspended the whole year for using marijuana. He's only hurting himself, not other human beings like Ray Rice. Although, I feel like that Ray Rice's being cut from the Baltimore Ravens was too harsh.

    1. No, its not soft what the NFL did. If you have a job, and you hit your girlfriend. Do they have the right to fire you? No, they don't. What ever happens outside of work, shouldn't matter with Ray Rice job. even after a month of the incident they got married. That's one of the reasons the NFL shouldn't get involved.

    2. I agree with you. The Ravens should've handled it better then just cutting him from the team yea he did something wrong and he knew he did something wrong he even looked into getting help

  9. I think the NFLs 2 game suspension was to soft . But on the other hand him getting cut from the team and being suspended indefinitely was to much.He knew what he did was wrong during a press conference he even said he was going to get help . But what the NFL did was to much they ruined his career we don't know when he'll be back . They should 've just gave him a 8-12 game suspension without pay .

    1. I would agree that the suspension was too soft to begin with but cutting him from the team was too much. They should have just extended the suspension the first time but the NFL already made their decision. They already saw the video and what he done but then too cut him after another video of the same thing seems too far on their part.

  10. Professional athletes are looked up to by millions of people, so it is important that they behave in a responsible manor and act as role models to the people who admire them. However, it is understandable that they are humans, just like those of us who pay to watch them play, and humans make mistakes. It is inevitable. What Ray Rice did is not excusable. He definitely deserves to be punished for assaulting a woman. The league needed to take action. Perhaps a two game suspension was not good enough. However, even though he did deserve a longer suspension, I do not think it was right for the NFL and the Baltimore Ravens to go back and change their decisions after new video evidence was released. Although now it was more public to the world, the crime did not change. Releasing Ray Rice from the team, and suspending him indefinitely was wrong.

    1. Although they had already made their decision about suspending him for only two games, I still think they had a right to cut him from the team. In a way i do also think it is kind of tough on him because they did already know the crime he committed. The video should not have made the NFL suspend him from the league indefinitely though, I think that might be going a little overboard considering they all had already known the extremes of the incident.

  11. I feel that what Ray Rice did was awful and utterly disrespectful to his wife. (Crazy how they still got married). First of all before anyone is to judge me on my opinion, you gotta think this through. I understand that hitting women is wrong, but there is a difference between the man hitting her first vs. her provoking him which caused him to hit her. Anyway I think the NFL established a 2 game suspension so why go back on it and make it worse. Just because the video got leaked doesn't mean it should be penalized even more, i mean its not like he did it again. All in all these athletes are looked up to as heros to these younger generations and with this day in age you could get caught with anything.

  12. Everyone has their role models that they look up to. To many this figure is an athlete. So, an athletes role is to be a good example to not only his teammates, but also to those that look up to him/her. In my opinion, Ray Rice should have received a harsher punishment. Instead of just being suspended from two games, I think it should have been at least six. The reason I think this, is because athletes should be a prodogy figure to others, not a bad example. However, I do not agree with him being suspended indefinitely, because once a punishment is given out, it should not be change.

    1. I do agree with you and what you wrote. I as well think that he should of gotten a harder punishment. Also, what good does it make it that the NFL kicks him off. They should stick to what they say because then it means that they can change other punishments as easily too.

  13. In my opinion, Rice got off really easy the first time with the two game suspension. But at the same time i feel like him being suspended indefinitely was a bit drastic. Even though it is wrong for a man to lay his hands on a woman, not to mention knock her out, they should have given him less of a punishment. Maybe half a year to a year would be a decent punishment. I think its stupid how the nfl changed their minds only because they seen the video of him knocking his wife out. He did admit to it already and got the punishment they thought he deserved for it. They maybe should've worsened the suspension, but not made it indefinite.

  14. I believe that Ray Rice should have been suspended longer because he is a professional athlete and a lot of people look up to him. I do not think that Ray Rice did a good thing because he should not let his anger out. He should learn to control his anger and not let it out on innocent people. He should of been suspended longer because others that might do something less aggressive are penalized more severely. I also believe that Janay should of not married Ray because he might hurt her again. I think that when a male hits a female then he is bound to hit the female again no matter if they are married or not.

    1. In my opinion, I also think that Ray Rice should have been suspended for more than two games, and that he has a lot of people that look up to him. However, we are all humans and we all tend to make many mistakes. Even though he probably regrets what he did, it still happened and he has to deal with the outcome. Also, I do not completely agree with your opinion that Janay should not have married Ray, because it was a choice that she made, and she obviously knew what he did to her. Maybe Ray learned from his mistake and will not do it again, but that is a risk that Janay took when she married him.

  15. People from all around the world are constantly viewing and idolizing famous athletes, because of this, it requires athletes to behave in a respected manner. Athletes should behave as a good role model because their actions are viewed by a vast amount of people. What Ray Rice did was undeniably disrespectful, abusive, and uncalled for. The NFL did a good thing by imposing a punishment for his wrong doing, but in my opinion, failed to punish properly. A two game suspension is a very minimum punishment for domestic violence. His suspension should have been longer with an included fine, however, I do not agree with an indefinite suspension, especially when a punishment was already imposed.

    1. I agree that what Ray Rice did should not have happened. However, I don't agree with the idea that he should act differently because people look up to him. I think that responsibility falls on the parents to make sure that the people that their kids look up to are good role models.

  16. I believe that Ray Rice did not receive a long enough suspension. I think he should have been suspended anywhere from six to eight games for domestic abuse. However, I do not think that Rice deserved to be suspended from the NFL indefinitely, but being cut from the Ravens was a choice of the team and how they want the image of their team to be represented. I also don’t think that Roger Godell should have been able to change Rice’s suspension after having one already implemented. He didn’t do anything different between the first video that came out and the one released today.

    1. I agree that Ray Rice should of been given a much stiffer penalty and should be out for about half the season. The way the NFL changed the punishment for Rice was wrong because the league already knew what Rice had done and the video should not have changed the first penalty.

    2. I do agree with your opinion that the suspension of Ray Rice at first was but long enough. It should of been around an eight game suspension. I also agree that Ray Rice did not deserve getting suspended from the NFL indefinitely. I sat that the made a good choice of cutting Rice off the team. They are trying to make their image look good and not bad. But, they lost a very good player and that will hurt the team throughout the session.

  17. What Ray Rice did was very wrong. I believe that the two game suspension was too soft. But, suspending him indefinitely was just messed up. I think he still deserved to play in the NFL. His outside life should not affect his playing time. He should have simply been pressed with charges of assault, and let the court system decide what to do. That decision just messed up a professional football players career/life. The NFL should come together and rethink their decision. They should only suspend Rice for like eight games.

    2. I agree that a 2 game suspension was very minimum for what he did and that it was messed up for the NFL to give him an indefinite suspension but I disagree with the rest of your statement. My first disagreement comes with your statement, "His outside life should not affect his playing time." I think it should matter or at least be taken into consideration. These men are looked up too by people, the NFL can't just have criminals playing in their league simply because their outside life should not be taken into consideration for their playing time. Reavis does this too, bad grades (outside life) affects the players playing time if they are doing poorly. My second disagreement comes with you stating that court should take care of it instead of the NFL because the NFL's punishment would ruin Rice's career. If court took over chances are he'd get charged with domestic violence. That could lead to time in jail. That would affect his career, an indefinite suspension will affect his career for a month or maybe a year but chances are he will be able to come back and play, it didn't ruin his career.

      Delete
    3. I agree that the 2-game suspension given to Rice was a bit "soft" and suspending him indefinitely will potentially ruin his career. The stuff you do off the field does affect you on the field and what Rice did could of been easily avoided if he kept his composure. The NFL should regather and rethink his punishment.

      Delete
    4. I agree that what Ray Rice did was very wrong and that the NFL suspending him indefinitely was just messed up. However, if he had made a wiser decision by keeping calm in the elevator, this incident never would have happened. Thus, he never would have been suspended.

  18. I think NFL should have suspended him the first longer not only two games. There's no reason why he should of knock her out what did he think was gone happen and he did not face any charges. I believe that he should face some charges. Athletes should be great role model their are watched by millions of people and everybody sees it.

  19. I think what Ray Rice did was horrible and shouldn't be recreated by another man. The two game suspension put on Ray Rice, for me wasn't enough and that the NFL should rethink the decision they made. They should extend the suspension but not to the extreme of suspending him indefinitely. You're talking about a mans way of life, he knows nothing else but football, if he does it a 2nd time it will be a different story because he didn't learn from the first time. Then you can suspend him from the NFL or whatever you think is a proper punishment.

    1. I agree, what Ray Rice did is horrible especially by a pro athlete and should have gotten a longer suspension the first time but cutting him from the team, I don't think that is probably the best way of solving it. It would be a different story if he did something like that again but I guess they wanted to make a statement and keep it from happening again.

  20. Ray Rice's 2-game suspension should be a bit more stiffer. No man should ever lay his hands on a woman like Rice did. The way Rice acted on the elevator should only be renacted by someone who is in a life or death situation. Clearly Rice was not in a life threatening situation. With the NFL only suspending Rice with 2 games, the league is not raising awareness for domestic abuse and is not disciplining its players. The NFL recently suspended Rice indefinitely and the Baltimore Ravens released him from the team. I believe the league was trying to make a statement to Rice and everyone else, to think about the consequences before they act.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Although I agree with most of your statement, my disagreement is about your opinion in the leagues statement. In my opinion the NFL is not trying to make a statement about consequences in peoples wrong doings by giving Rice an indefinite suspension. What the NFL is trying to do is simply cover their back after all the negative feedback they received about how minimum the punishment was. Their statement about domestic violence was imposed when they gave Rice the 2 game suspension. Domestic violence is still a crime, even at the barest minimum and the NFL knew that, so just because they saw a video it gives them more right to change his punishment? No, they thought a 2 game suspension was the proper punishment, giving him an indefinite suspension was just a way to cover their backs to all the negative responses they were receiving about insufficient amount of punishment.

      Delete
    2. I agree with your statement that Ray Rice's suspension should have been harsher. I also believe that the NFL is sending a message to all of the players and coaches that the NFL will not tolerate any negative actions and there will be even harsher punishments if anyone makes the NFL look bad.

      Delete
  21. I believe the NFL should have been harsher on Ray Rice. I believe that a two game suspension is not enough it should be more. Ray is a professional athlete and should act like a professional at all times. Being a professional athlete means he has kids looking up to him and punching your fiancé and knocking her out in an elevator is not being a good role model. Recently the actual footage of Ray Rice punching his fiancé has been released and the NFL went ahead and changes their minds suspending Ray indefinitely. The NFL should not have given him a harsher punishment because they have actually seen the video.

    1. In a way I agree, since the NFL had already known what Ray Rice had done they should not have let the video change their decision as much as it did. I mean maybe they might have suspended him a little longer, but not indefinitely. I feel that is a little harsh considering the way they found everything out.

    2. Yes you are exactly right Azmi Zomot. The two game suspension was defiantly not enough. I believe it should have been a half a year to a year and should have also been thrown in jail because he laid hands on a woman. Kids do in fact look up to him because he is in the NFL so that can really make a kid think. but what you had said that the NFL should not have given him a harsher punishment because they have actually seen the video. Yes that is true its is wrong of them to change it but still the punishment should have been more worse than it was right now.

    3. I agree with Azmi. If you're a professional athlete, you better believe part of the job is not just playing sports but you must be responsible and take responsibilities on your own actions. I don't think knocking his fiancé and (now his wife) was the smartest thing to do.

  22. In my opinion Ray Rice should have a harsher punishment. Punching a women is a terrible thing and since he is in the public eye he should receive a bigger punishment. Ray Rice once was a role model for little kids and now kids see this happening on the new and is gonna think this is ok to harm women, but it is not. When the TMZ video had been released today I was quite shocked to hear from the NFL that Ray rice will be suspended indefinitely. The NFL was aware of what he had done, gave him a punishment, and now seen the video and gave him a more abominable punishment. Why would they change their mind? After a punishment is given it should not be changed due to more evidence

    2. I agree with your opinion that Ray Rice should have been suspended for more than two games and that the NFL should not have changed their minds about his punishment. I also agree with the fact that what he did was in no way good. However, I personally do not think that the video will effect little kids as much as they will teenagers and young adults. I feel like most of the people that looked up to him were teens that want to play football like him, and adults that were counting on him to do well during games.

I think the NFL should of been much striker than just an two game suspension. I would of been fair if the NFL game him a 6-8 game suspension for domestic violence. The part that I still don't get is why did you hit her and she's a girl. I think that the officials were wrong for deciding what to do after looking at the second video, I think that the officials should of looked into the incident and then decided what to do after, the officails actually had nothing to do with the situation, they should of left it alone and let Ray and his wife to fix the incident.

There's players that get suspended for a whole season for doing something like marijuana or even a fight outside of the NFL. I think ray rice did a horrible thing but I dont think they should suspend him from the nfl.I think they should have suspended him for,1 year or maybe more but not for good.I mean how else is ray rice going to earn money now, he might have millions of dollars but how long will that last him?He better have a 2nd career job other then the nfl, cause eventually he will have problem if he doesn't find a second career.I think ray rice should have just push her away or just grabbed her so that he wouldn't got in trouble, now he is into a big mess.

    1. I don't think money is the issue in Ray Rice's situation. In 2012, two years before being released by Baltimore, he signed a $35 million contract with the Ravens which guaranteed him at least $15 million and a $7 million signing bonus. Not only is he set for life, but so is his daughter. Ray Rice will face much bigger problems without the ability to play. He loves the sport of football. And now, because of one mistake he doesn't even know if he'll ever be able to play again. Another problem he will face in the future is living with himself and with his actions. He will always be known for assaulting his girl friend. When his name comes up, no one will think about the 6000 rushing yards he gained of the 37 touchdowns he scored.
