Jackie Robinson

Does it matter that only 7.8% of all Major League Baseball players are African American?

  1. I don’t think it matters that only 7.8% of all Major League Baseball players are African American. I say that because you don’t base a sport on a certain race. A sport is a sport. I think whoever is interested in playing a certain sport, should be allowed to play. There’s no way to really make other races play a sport if they chose not to. They can play whatever sport they please. People can teach each other to play. The color of your their skin, isn’t going to change the outcome of the sport itself. So no, I don’t think it matters that only 7.8% of all Major League Baseball players are African American.

  2. It really shouldn't matter what percentage of African Americans are in Major League Baseball because it doesn't matter what race you are, they are looking for people who have talent and skill. I am pretty the MLB is not being prejudice towards African Americans, it just so happens to be that there are more white people than African Americans in the MLB. Race shouldn't be an issue in today's society because we are used to seeing white people and black people on the same team.

  3. I don't think it really should matter because people have a choice in what sport they want to play. I think there are not as many African Americans in baseball today because they just don't want to play baseball as much as other sports. I don't think there should be a certain amount of African American players on a team. I think you should earn a roster spot by your play not your color. To me there isn't as many African Americans in baseball, simply because they don't want to play. I think it is stupid that the African American is a statistic and people are sending each other hate mail because of it.

  4. It doesn't really matter in terms of the game itself. every single player could be a six-hundred pound vegetable and it still wouldn't matter, so long as the game is actually being played. its when the human factor is taken into account that things get screwy. Things like morality and equality and other such things that are solely driven on emotion, that things change. Jackie Robinson was the first African-American to play baseball in the major leagues, and while at the time was a huge thing, in this day and age, the statistics of African-Americans involved in sporting events just aren't that impactful. The game is still just that, a game, and it doesn't really matter who plays it, just so long as it gets played and people enjoy it.

  5. I don’t think it matters that only 7.8% of all Major League Baseball players are African American. In my opinion it shouldn't matter how many African Americans are in Major League Baseball because it doesn't matter what race you are, the teams are looking for people who have talent and skill. They look for people that know how to play and they only take the people who will make a change in the team and play good for the team. If you are really good and the teams see you that u have enough skill to play for the team they will take you no matter what race you are. In basketball there are mostly black, and white people don't seem to be crying about that, at least not that I heard abut it.

  6. I don't think it matters that only 7.8% of the major league baseball player are African American. If we look at basketball most of the players are African American and little whites. The game does not know Africans or whites it only knows how good a player is. If someone is good enough to make it in the team than they will, but if they can't play good than they will not make it in the team.

  8. In my opionion it should not matter how many players or a certian specific race are playing in any sport and not just when it comes to African Americans in baseball. They are being allowed to play the sport, but the reasoning of the ratio stands behind the decions of African Americans simply choosing not to play the sport. Baseball is open for everyone to try out and play, and at the end of the day the decisiom belongs to the talented individuals. America needs to stop trying to prove a point of us being a unified country, which I believe we are, but in this situation it seems a little ridicolous.

  9. It shouldn't matter what percentage of any race is involved in a sport, so long as the league is allowing and encouraging people of all races to join. I think the MLB is turning this situation into a larger deal than it really is. Many leagues have discrepancies in race that are similar to or even worse than the MLB's predicament. The NHL comes to mind immediately, wherein the percentage of African American players seems like it would be very similar to or even less than that of the MLB's percentage. Also, the NBA's percentage of latino players seems very low, although this fact is often overlooked.

  10. I don’t think it matters that only 7.8% of all Major League Baseball players are African American. It should not matter what race you are while playing professional sports. They are looking for people with talent and skills not what race you are. I think they are just over reacting about the whole situation. Sports should be fun and they shouldn't be looking for who is playing. There is a lot of races that play in the MBL so why do they have to make a big deal about African Americans playing. If your not good enough than why should they put you on the team its all about competition and how good you are.

  11. It shouldn't matter that only 7.8% of MLB players are African American. I don't believe racism is a big issue in American sports, basketball in the U.S is played prodominatly by blacks, simply because they excel at it compared to most whites. Baseball has a low percentage of blacks for the same reason, except that whites excel at baseball instead of blacks. If all MLB baseball teams goals are to win the World Series then they would make the best team they possibly can under their given circumstances. Another problem for blacks, is that there is a large percentage of them who live in large cities. These large cities don't have room for peewee baseball fields to be built thus, making it difficult for blacks to get into the game of baseball.

  12. In my opinion, the fact that only 7.8% of baseball players are black does not matter. There are many black players in many other sports such as football and basketball. Maybe African Americans aren't interested in baseball, so they themselves choose not to play it. Although, I disagree with people trying to put more black players into baseball I understand their reasoning. Baseball is supposedly "America's pastime" and African Americans not being involved in Americas pastime might make them seem or feel un-American. But overall, I disagree with thinking that there's too little African American baseball players because they are involved in many other American sports.

  13. I guess it doesn't matter that there is a low percentage of black people in baseball because when it's comes to being a professional at a certain sport it doesn't matter what race they are but how talented they are. Besides most black people are more talented in sports like football and basketball

  15. I honestly don't think it matters if a player is white, hispanic, or African american. Just because a person is African american doesn't mean he is bad or good at a sport. Anyone can be really good at a sport or be terrible at another. It doesn't mean that the sport or coach is racist because it's such a small percentage of African Americans in baseball. There are many African Americans that play basketball and that have become legends. Jackie Robinson is one of the greatest baseball legends because of being the first African American to play baseball and to be on a team.

  16. I think it shouldn't matter that there is only 7.8 percent black's in baseball. I think this way is because not all black's are made for baseball. Most of the them are made for basketball and football. The MLB isn't being racist because, if that was the case, then NBA would be saying that for not having enough white's play in the NBA. They choose what sport they play, it happens they choose basketball, and football over baseball because, their better at those sports. Some grow up with different talents then other's. And it happens that black's have better skills and talent in basketball, and in football, and not in baseball. That's just how it is in sports. It doesn't change how we view the sport of baseball, because black's still play. Also they mostly look at who can play the game, and who could understand it, not the race and color. Hockey is full of whites, and mostly no blacks, and they dont care if no black's play because, their not good at it, it isn't made for them, just like baseball.

  17. I honestly don't think that it matters in any way that that percentage is low on African-American in the MLB because of the fact that the athletes of this race mainly come out statistically in football and basketball successfully but do not always have the interest in perusing a dream as a baseball player. It also is not any type of racism involved considering they have some involved and are continuing to find more of them who may not only play at this level but also break records and get the team recognition.
