Do you agree with placing "Cut" in the unit titled "The Glory and Inspiration of Sports"? Explain why or why not and provide specific textual support to back up your claim.
I think this should be on the unit "the glory and inspiration of sports. This should be because even thought it doesn't talk about sport except for when they get cut it show how that failure inspired the 5 main people to be better than what they where. To help their inspiration and determination grow they said that they could remember all of the words the days the felling of their failure. Like the part of the book where the man remembered when the coach told him that he was never good and then he became much better at what he does now then what he did before. Or how the one man was always on the bench never in the game till the last pitch when he did even get the chance to show what he got but then became a big time reporter for the CBS news team. So in a way this whole passage does fall into this unit in sports lit by show us that's it's not while playing the sport inspiration and glory can happen but when they are those who try yet don't make it there is still that glory and inspiration that happens because they become bigger than what they might of been if they followed that road into sports.
I think that this should not be in the unit " The Glory and Inspiration of Sports" because, it does not talk about how good they are and what they have accomplished. It shows the people who were not good enough and they have not made the team. The people care too much about high school, and it doesn't really matter now when they are older. It's not like there were going to be professional players in a league if they didn't even make the high school team. I think that there is nothing to cry about, because it was just high school and now life goes on and you have to keep moving forward. You have to forget what happened back then when you were in high school and just live your life the way it is.
I agree with you because if you don't make the team in high school that doesn't mean that it will change what the future holds. The past is the past and you just have to be strong enough physically and emotionally to find out the person you were meant to be.
Personally, I would be slight hesitant in placing the story “Cut” in the unit titled "The Glory and Inspiration of Sports." The rationale behind my opinion lies behind the fact that the life stories of the men mentioned showed how being cut from a team-something that meant so much to them when they were little boys- pushed them away from sports and into another direction. The stories, however, are inspiring in a way that would teach you to eliminate something you loved but failed at out of your life when it doesn't work out in order to try something you might be better at. The men became successful, but when they were said no to, they simply gave up. That's not inspiration. It would have been inspirational if they kept working and achieving what they were said no to in the first place.
I think that this should be placed in the unit because its not really the Inspiration of sports but, its more about the glory of sports. The glory of this story "cut" is that these people didn't success in what they love, which is sports, but they push past it and became a better person overall. They used it as a tool to make there lives so much better. It teaches people that if something that you love fails on you, there are so many things you can do to refill those gaps in your life. Yeah it ruined your childhood a tad bit, but it motivates you that your better then what other people tell your not. Don't listen to what other have to say about you and just follow your dreams. It would be more inspirational if they worked harder at what sport they were playing and became really good at it. Just like Micheal Jordan, but this isn't the case here. They stopped playing the sport and became a better as an entire person.
I feel that adding "Cut" to "The Glory and Inspiration of Sports" would help inspire more people because it shows the readers the truth about life and that not everyone is made to make it on a team all the time. It shows us the real world and that this life isn't all "rainbows and sunshine" and you have to be tough in this life. You can't let something push you down, you have to get back up. Like the characters in "Cut," they used being cut from a team as a motivation to not fail again and never let someone tell them that they aren't good enough or that they can't do it. They now are successful, but they still have that memory of being cut and use that as a motivation to never fail. No matter how hard life hits you, you must find a way to get back up. Never let anyone tell you you aren't good enough, use that as a motivating tool to make yourself the best at whatever you do. The only person who can tell you that you can't do it or you're not good enough is yourself.
"Cut should fall under the category of "The Glory and Inspiration of Sports" because not only does it inspire others to be better at a sport, it also inspires people to be better in other aspects of their life. This inspiration stems from the failures that all of the characters in "Cut" endured. Here is a statement that sums up how getting cuts affects you, "... I don't know what went on in my head following the day when I was cut. But i know that my ambition has been enormous ever since then..." This quote from "Cut" shows that being told you aren't good enough forces you to strive to become the best you can be in order to not be told that you aren't good enough ever again. This could be applied to trying out next year for the same sport, or to anything else you do in life, whether it is participating drama, your occupation, or even being a student, you will have that ambition to never feel failure again. This inspiration would firmly place "Cut" into the "The Glory and Inspiration of Sports" because it also shows how glorious sports can be. Without the characters being cut from their teams, Bob Graham wouldn't be a highly successful lawyer and Maurice McGrath wouldn't be a vice president of a mortgage banking firm in California.
I think placing "Cut" in this unit is a good choice and a bad one at the same time. This piece talks about how being cut from a team during childhood leaves and impact on your life years to come. It describes successful people with high positions that speak about their experiences about being cut from a childhood team. The writer introduces each character with the position they work in after their name to show how they accomplished things other than making the team. Each of the characters that shared their experience learned from this event positvely and worked harder to accomplish tasks that assisted them in reaching the postitions they work in today. These positve examples represent why it would work in the unit "The Glory and Inspiration of Sports". However, each of the characters remembered the day they got cut vividly and it left an emotional scar on their personality. One character showed hatred towards the coach that cut him 40 years ago. These examples can argue that "Cut" should have been placed in the unit "The Darkside of Sports" because it caused these players to hold grudges and be emotionally damged because they were not good enough.
Yes I agree with placing "Cut" with our unit because that theme is an important part of all sports. In a lot of stories and movies, the main character gets "Cut" from the team that they love or from the job that they wanted. But that does not put them down, it makes them do more so no one will tell them that they are not good enough. " sometimes, you have to get knocked down lower than you have ever been, to stand back up taller than you ever were." This quote defines why failure is needed to get people stand up stronger. " Those who dare to fail miserably can achieve greatly." This quote says it all.
I believe it falls under insperation and glory because, even though you have been cut, or told you where no good, you prove to your self, and others, that you are good at something. You could use it as a tool, or a weapon to keep moving foward, and do better. These five men loved sports, but they where told they where no good, but they didn't let that keep them down. The five men pushed themselves to imrpove, and they became sucssesful. The man that was told he was no good, but he became somthing bigger in the long run in his life. When the man never played, except last pitch, and was embarssed by his coach, and put him out there just for the fun of it, that man ended up becoming the top new's reporter. It is glory and insperation beacuse, they all moved foward, never let the cut bring them down, and became wealthy men.
I think the story cut should not be in "The Glory and Inspiration of Sports" because it has nothing to do with them being good at the sport. It talks about how the man when they were young they were always cu because they were not good enough for the team. It show how the event has strongly impacted their life's. It has been a couple of years and they still could not forget that they were not good enough. I think it is going to stick with them for a very long time, but they wont let anyone bring them to the lowest. The man will always believe he is good enough because their mind just can not accept being not good enough. I think they all are holding a grudge towards their coaches because they did not make the team. Now 30 40 years after they all are successful in life because they knew they were not good in one thing so they found something that fit them and their personality. I Think "cut" should have been placed in " The Dark side of Sports"because it shows the dark side that years later it still haunts them that they were not good enough for the sport.
I do believe that this story, "Cut", is right where it needs to be in terms of placement in the curriculum. Although all of the main characters from this selection were devastated subsequent to being cut from their respective high school teams, all of them - including the famous news anchor Dan Rather - learned an important lesson that they would use for the rest of their lives. They learned to be more ambitious, to be more determined, and most importantly, to never let anybody tell them their not good enough. This was an emotionally scarring event. This is apparent through the vivid details that the characters can recall. Specifically, one character can remember walking home on a cold and rainy day. Another remembers the exact words his coach told him the day he was cut. Getting cut can be hurtful, but in the case of these characters, they became more successful later in life because of the lessons they each learned from the traumatic events that transpired the day they were cut. Reiterating, this IS an inspirational story and it fits perfectly into this unit.
I think the “Cut” should be under the unit titled “the glory and inspiration of sports.” I think this because this could probably be one of the most embarrassing experience in somebody's life, I think it is what you do afterwards someone tells you, you are not good enough to be on the team. You can let them tell you, you are not good enough or you can go and put in work in the weight room, field, track, anywhere you need improvement, and make yourself better. To me getting cut would motivate me. It would make me mad that people think I am not good enough to play a sport, it would be embarrassing to me. I think when Maurice McGrath tells his story something that really caught my attention was when he said his own coach told him he was no good. To me thats the reason why the “Cut” should be in this unit. The reason why I think this is because those experiences can make or break you as a person and even an athlete. When people tell me I can not do something I try and do it when they do not expect it. I think those stories are significant because those people who were cut back in their childhood now have established lives and who knows where those star athletes for a high school team are at now.
I do believe that cut would fit in this unit of inspiration and glory. Each individul git cut when they were young and became happy, determined people as they grew old. It did effect them when they were young. In example; Dan Rather - was never cut from his junior high school baseball team because the school was to small - anchor of the "CBS Evening News." In his case he never played until the last game of the season with one pitch left, put him in right field. Another example is Bob Graham, is a partner with Jenner & block law firm in chicago. Was a decent baseball player But when he moved to to a bigger high school didn't make the team since then he has changed. That he didn't want people to say to him that your not good enough. That why I do think that the reading "cut" is inspirational because each person was destroyed as a kid and grew to be successful people.
I think the “Cut” should be added under the unit titled "The Glory and Inspiration of Sports" there are a lot of In a lot of stories when the main character gets "Cut" from the team that they love or from the job that they wanted and could do everything to be on. Although this is not doing anything to them to be weak it inspires them more to be on and show them that they will be on its team. To me it is just like that "Never Give Up" here is the clue. If you want to achieve something and you really want and u know it you can be what ever you want. The only person who can tell you want you are good is yourself and you knowledge. Just believe in your self.
Cut” should not fall under the category of "The Glory and Inspiration of Sports" because this piece is not really about inspiration. It’s basically taking about how being cut from a team during a childhood can affect u later in life. It shows that the main characters were not good enough and how they didn’t make it on the team. It’s saying how even though all main characters grew up and got successful but yet, they still remember the little things that hurt those, when they were in their teens. Each of the characters remembered the day they got cut vividly and it left an emotional scar. It caused these players to hold grudges and be emotionally damaged because they still remember what happened a long time ago. They now are successful, but they still have that memory of being cut and use that as a motivation to never fail. Even though I agree that a person should never give up, I just don’t think this piece would be a good example to be placed under the category “The Glory and Inspiration of Sports.” In my opinion, this type of piece gives the reader a perfect example of reality.
I think the title cut is an appropriate title for the unit "the glory and inspiration of sports" because getting cut from anything can be the most embarassing moment In someone life. But I also think that getting cut can be a devastating moment in someones life. Like all the men from the story who got cut became successful in the future by becoming somone important. I also think it's a good title for the unit because being cut is basically saying that your not good enough to be on the team. Which can hurt someone pretty bad that like In the story they still remember vivid details about what had happen the day they got cut. But being cut can be a good thing in life because it can make a person willing to work harder and be more tough as a person and make sure they never get told their not good enough to do something. Like quoted from the unit it says"in traveling around the country, I have found that an inordinately large proportion of successful men share that same memory-the memory of being cut from a sports team as a boy." Which is really true and that backs up my point because it shows that men being cut work harder to be successful and not to be told their not good enough.
"Cut" shouldn’t be titled under "the glory and inspiration of sports". The story doesn't not help inspire people. This shows the dark side of sports. Sports can be fun, inspiring, entertaining, but there are many dark sides of sports, and this is one of them. Not everyone can be "good enough" for a certain sport. For example, if you were 4`2 you probably wouldn’t be accepted into the NBA. Telling a kid you're not good enough at such a young age, can kill their self-esteem. Sports mean a lot too many different people, and to take that away is such a horrible thing to do. Then again it’s up to the person to show them that they’re wrong, and that’s what the kids in the story did. Keep in mind thou, that not all people are strong like them; they can’t handle being told they’re not good enough. Sports have good in bad in them, and you can look at this situation in different ways. It could be somehow inspiring when you look at all the different people that didn’t get cut.
I think that "cut" should not be titled under " the glory and inspiration of sports" because it doesn't help with the explanation of the title and it shows the bad part of sports. A player being cut either makes him/her work harder or makes them give up. It shows the dark side of sports because it may help or ruin someones future. Being cut can also be a good thing in life because it can show a person that there will always be someone better than you, no matter what. Nobody is perfect and everyone has to work for their spot. A sport can mean a lot to a person because it can change their life. I think it's much harder for a coach to cut a student athlete that worked hard and loved the sport. I do feel bad for the athletes that get cut from a sport they love but I truly think it will make them stronger during the long run.
Cut is the type of story that fits about as well into this unit as a square peg does in a round hole. This story would fit better if it were to be in a unit for the darker side of sports, as this is not inspirational at all, nor does it have any form of glory for either the characters or the sport itself. the idea of the story is more for how crushing failure can be, so much so that it will stay with you for years and years. it is the type of story that would be used as a warning to anyone who wanted to play the game, like a way of telling them, "If you suck bad enough, this is what could happen to you!" Now, I may be the only one who sees it that way, but it is still a valid point. It COULD have been in the category of inspirational, had it been about someone who was told that they suck at the game, and then proceeded to prove everyone wrong. However, that is not what happened. it was just a retelling of what happened to some random people, and their story of how the sport that denied them still haunts them to this day.
I think this should be on the unit "the glory and inspiration of sports. This should be because even thought it doesn't talk about sport except for when they get cut it show how that failure inspired the 5 main people to be better than what they where. ReplyDeleteI think that "cut" should not be titled under " the glory and inspiration of sports" because it doesn't help with the explanation of the title and it shows the bad part of sports.
ReplyDeleteCut is the type of story that fits about as well into this unit as a square peg does in a round hole.
