Read Green Bay Packer Jermichael Finley's first-hand account of his recent injury (click on "a collison" in the article to view a video of the injury). Next, comment in some way on what you read. The subject of your commentary is endless, but these are some possible suggestions: Relate what he went through to something in your own life. React to one of the comments from fans that follow the article. Argue for or against the new tackling rules in the NFL that are supposed to keep players from getting hurt.
"Jermichael Finley: Fear. Relief. Resolve.
I somewhat know how Finley feels. During the seizures I had had, I was afraid I would lose my memory. Not knowing who anyone, including you, is, is frightening. But, later on, I realized that everything would be alright. I have not had a seizure since 2002. Furthermore, there is no need for the new rules because more people are actually injuring their knees as a result.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you josh there is no need for new rules more players are getting hurt. Just like mr Ericson said would you rather get a knee injurie and not play for a month or possibly a year or get a head injurie and I'll affect u later
DeleteThe new tackling rules in the NFL that are supposed to keep players from getting hurt has a complete opposite outcome. Were seeing a plethora of players getting severe knee injuries, such as Sam Bradford with an ACL tear. By taking away helmet to helmet contact the NFL is forcing players to hit each other in more vulnerable areas such as the knees. Taking aim at the gut area is a great risk for defensive players because now they have to worry about if the other player will duck with his head. The NFL should not eliminate helmet to helmet contact all together but ban targeting a player in the head who is in a up right stance.
ReplyDeleteI think the NFL is in such a bind, and the only way to fix this is the eradication of football.
DeleteI agree they need to think of a better way to make football less injury prone.
DeleteThese guys in the NFL and those who have retired in recent years are tough people. High school football is one thing, college is another and professional is the worst it gets. These players in the NFL are bigger, stronger and some love to get in people's heads or affect their game so much they would try to hurt them. There are several cases of "dirty" players but it's just how the game goes sometimes. A lot of hits are clean, but just cause they look bad or ended bad one might be quit to throw a flag or complain that that man is a "dirty" player. Dirty or clean, these people who put themselves in harms way Sunday in and Sunday out do a fantastic job and keep fans watching. I just felt like some what or a praise was needed to be given to these players.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you so much Tino. I believe that more ignites will happen from this situation. It's quite terrible
DeleteI agree, and in my opinion people will eventualy see every hit to the head as a dirty play and almost everyone on the defensive end will be thought as a dirty player.
DeleteI agree Tino. These players are becoming bigger and bigger every year. And they are paid to do what they do best: hit hard.
DeleteI do agree on that , that a player meanlessly hits another player on accident and automactily gets called to be a dirty player , it's just shameful , because however the hit is , the broadcasters will use that hit as a reason the NFL changed it's rules , based on a accidental hit .
DeleteI agree that it gets tougher when you are a professional.
DeleteI can relate to jermicheal on an injury note, having that movtavtion inside you to build up and keep on playing the sport you love, my comparison is when I was playing back catcher , and not knowing I was close to the batter, and when the batter swung his bat , my left arm caught the end of the bat , and I felt my whole change and though I could never catch with my left arm, the pain just stung and shocked from my finger tips to my shoulder, I just felt like a very strong bee sting just ended my chances of catching, but come to find out it was just badly bruised and I was able to keep playing and wonderful that I made a full recovery. As for the new rules , I think the NFL should allow the players below the waist but keep it at a knee high level , I just think the players should lean shoulder first instead of head to head contact and use more a shoulder than leading with your head .
ReplyDeleteIt's good that Finley was trying to have some humor after that injury. Not many people can put a smile on there face after an injury like that. Like Finely said he put his head down to protect his knees, if he didnt do that he probably would of gotten some lower body injuries. All the NFL rules keep changing, and i dont understand why. These players keep getting hurt either way. Football is a tough game, players will always get hurt.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with you Wojtek football is a tough game and no matter how many rules you change players will still get injured.
DeleteThe football players are extremely tough individuals and like Finley they face the risk of serious injury. However, NFL's decision would not resolve the problem of players getting seriously hurt. The new tackling rules I believe would cause higher percentage of injuries in the NFL. Therefore, they should come up with new tackling techniques that don't just fix one aspect and cause another problem. It's a tough problem for the NFL, but at least the health awareness of the players increased for better.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you as well. There is a greater chance if injury through these new rules. Many knees will be blown due to this in my opinion.
DeleteI think the new NFL rules makes the players more injury prone. The defenders are now aiming their hits towards the knees of the players. This is what caused Finley to lower his shoulder. I think the defenders should be able to hit high to protect the health of the players. A concussion will keep a player out of the game for a week or two, but a knee injury usually ends the season for a player or ends their career.
ReplyDeleteI agree, the NFL will have more problems with the new rules.
DeleteI agree, new problems will face the NFL as the career ending knee injuries become more common like Joe Theismans and Daunte Culpepper.
DeleteI agree, taking out someones legs can be more career ending than a concussion.
DeleteI agree with you, I would rather have a concussion and be out for a couple of weeks, than have a knee problem for the rest of my life.
DeleteI do agree that they should hit high , do to the fact either your out for a game or two , or your out for the entire season on a leg injury
DeleteI agree except concussions can have life long effects later in your life when knee injuries can heal.
DeleteI think the new NFL rules are garbge along with a plethora of other people, but the NFL had do something because they getting rule as a violent sport. So they came up with a new set of rules trying to eliminate head too head contact. This of course because of the recent jump in the rate of concussions suffered in the NFL and the effects it can have on the brain further in life after the NFL such as suicide and mental illnesses. For example the former Chargers safety Paul Oliver who commited suicide late last september. I geuss what I'm trying to say is that I dont like the new rule set I say let them play, but I agree with the NFL that they had too do something about it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Chris. I also feel that the NFL had to do something about the myriad concussions these players get.
DeleteThat`s sad Chris NFL players do not deserve to have mental illnesses and commit suicide. I never would of that that injuries could cause players to commit suicide.
DeleteI believe that the hit Gibson put on Finley was perfectly legal. Gibson led with his shoulder and had only one target to hit...the head. Finley was not a defenseless receiver making the hit legal. The NFL is starting to ruin the game with all these novel rules. Football is a dangerous sport and you might get hurt bad. Its a players choice if he wants to risk his health.
ReplyDeleteWell said, Aaron. Injuries are a part of the game and that will never change. It's key that you mentioned it's up to the player because it really is, they don't have to play if they don't want to... They choose to.
DeleteEvery football player knows the risk that they put themselves in when they step out on that field. It they truly love the sport they should always make sure they play safe. Accidents happen. Just like this one. No one should ever go out on the field with the intention of hurting anyone. I don't think that was on either player's mind. It happened, They should now try to learn from it not change a rule because of it
DeleteThe hit that Gibson gave was a legal hit. It wasnt his fault either. It was Finley's fault for leading with his head like that. They made that rule for running backs and defenders to stop those kinda injurys. To many people are getting neck injurys and concussions. The NFL is starting to make to many rules. They should stop making rules and let the players play. IF they end up hurting them self its on them because they know what can happen when playing a physical sport.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the players want to play and they should be able to play and not be controlled by rules.
DeleteIt is terrible he got hit and had such trauma rushed to the hospital. I think it was his fault because he put his head down so low. But football is a fast sport like what he says in the article, “It all happened very quickly.” But it is the players choice to play football and understand there will be injuries involved. New techniques are causing other injuries and problems. Knees are important for swift movements and take long to recover even though spinal and head injuries are long lasting. Therefore, rules should not be changed but players should be more careful.
ReplyDeleteThat quote from the article is so true everything happens so quickly. Like I said in josh comment also it depends on how players see it, I repeat would u rather get a head Injuries and see the affect later or get a knew injurie and have to not play for months or years. It' all depends on the player himself they know what their getting themself into
DeleteYes it all happens quickly and Finley's natural reaction was to protect himself and that's what caused the injury.
DeleteI believe that the NFL had took a totally different outlook in this whole situation. I believe that more players will get hurt due to this situation. For example more knees will be blown out and that's such a terrible thing to have.
ReplyDeleteI agree, with a concussion a player is out for a short period of time but a knee injury can take you out for a long time or even ruin your career.
DeleteI agree, a lot of players go for the legs because they are too fast or strong to tackle from the top. This will only make it more of a habit to go for the legs.
DeleteI think that either way there will be injuries. No matter what rules they make.
DeleteThe rules keep changing, but the players keep getting injured. This just shows that you cant get away from an injury in football.
DeleteI don`t believe they should have new tackling rules because it`s just going to turn out that there is more injury`s at another part of the body. If you can`t hit them in the back then you will hit him at the knees which will lead to more knee injuries. I believe the same will happen no matter what rules they make up it`s still gonna lead to increased injuries in a particular body part. Football is a contact sport and it should stay that way or it`s not going to be football anymore. Therefore, i believe they shouldn`t change the rules but they could inform the players on injuries and tackling.
ReplyDeleteI agree because no matter what they do, they cant prevent every injury there is.
DeleteThere has been a myriad of injuries in the NFL this season. These injuries might be caused by the NFL's new rules. They're trying to protect people from long lasting injuries like dementia.while the rules are protecting people from these injuries, they're also causing other injuries like ACL tears. So people are going to protect their knees, like Finely. The NFL needs to create better rules to protect its players. Finely described the harrowing experience in detail and it makes you fear with him.
ReplyDeleteGetting hurt playing a sport that you truly love and possibly ending your career is something that I can relate to. The injury that I sustained to my knee last year during the Homecoming game could have ended my chances of ever playing this past year or in the future. Changing and adding new rules is not always the answer. There is risk in everything that you do. An athlete accepts that risk when they step on the field regardless of the sport. It is up to them to make sure that every time they step on the field that they play by the rules and play safely. And when they don't, they need to face the consequences.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe they should change the rules anymore than they already have. Football has always been a real contact sport. If they change the rules anymore, it wouldn't be consider football anymore. I agree that they shouldn't go head on head because of all the concusions and neck injuries. If you make some way of tackling illegal, they will just find a different way of tackling them. Which can make it even more dangerous.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Jose. The NFL should not have the ability to keep changing rules every year just because a player gets injured. Instead they should be coming up with ways to teach and inform the players on what is wrong with the way the play went down
DeleteThese rules will only change what kind of injuries will happen and not how many. Now that no head to head contact is allowed, the players will be aiming lower and the injuries will now happen in the lower area. These players must be frustrated at the fact that they have to learn new rules and adjust how they play. I'd be frustrated if I had to do that in hockey or swimming. I personally believe that either way there will be injuries and there's no way around it. There's no point of charming the rules and they should stay the same.
