One of the themes Bissinger emphasizes in FNL is racism. How would you describe race relations both in the community of Burbank and Reavis High School? Are there any similarities to Odessa and Permian High School?
I could describe the race relations in Burbank and Reavis High School like normal there is no out right separation between whites and everybody like in Odessa who separate everybody by build school for each race and build a fence to keep African Americans from the whites. We treat each other with respect here and there is not much racism here because many people now are more open mind then back then. We also don’t use the n word like they did back then to describe somebody from African American descent. There is no similarity between Odessa and Burbank because we live in two different periods of time where back then it was normal and now it is frown on.
The relations between the in Burbank and Reavis High School are unlike those of Odessa. Their is no distinct separation except for the occasional block that is predominantly one race. The difference between Reavis and Permian is that Reavis is made up of a lot of immigrants from all over the world and noticing any racism is difficult because each nationality group has its own language that one does not know. For that reason Reavis and Odessa cannot be compared about racism because Reavis is new school with a mixture of culture while Permian is old school in an old racist town.
I believe that there is little to no racism in Burbank and in Reavis High School. African-Americans and whites get along very well. Today, it is definitely not like Odessa where racism was big. The n word was used big time back then. Nowadays, everyone is treated with respect. That the way it should be everywhere. Furthermore, there are no similarities between Odessa and Burbank whatsoever.
I believe there`s barely any racism in Burbank and Reavis High School. None of Burbank is set up in sections where each race lives. Everybody lives next to everybody no matter who or what you are. There might be a block that has a greater population of one race than another but that's just a coincidence.Another big difference is we live in two different periods of time back in the 1980`s the South was a whole lot more racist than we are now. Everybody gets respected now a days no matter what the color of your skin is.
We seem to respect eachother a lot more than before because of our community and country grew out of the racism period. I completely agree with your statement about everyone being respected.
Very well said Daniel I totally agree whit you here in burbank is so mixes i live next to muslams and polish so there is a great example we get along very well no problems at all
I believe that every where you go there is going to be racism. We live in a society where people judge you just by the way you look or by the color of your skin. In our school we have many different types of cultures. It seems that we all get to like eachother as soon as we get to know eachother. There is similaraties between those two schools very much. They both have very talented football players. Once they started letting more African Americans into Permian, they became an even better team!
I agree with u Jose it's seems everywhere we go we are judge by the way we look dress act or even talk. People might not be racist but they are judgementall still
I belive we have many differences between Odessa and Burbank to benign we all treat eachother with respect no matter what color or race you are. Unlike Odessa color and race mattered. Some people are racist in Burbank but not as bad as in Odessa.
I think the authority in burbank are alittle racist when it comes to certain races while driving and walking to point A to point B , I feel when moving out to Burbank and I just feel there is a favoritism to a certain color in Burbank majority of the time.
I think odessa and burbank community have no similarities at all because odessa is very racist when it comes to black people beeing there, there is much proof of that in the story. Burbank is very excepting when itncomes to race.burbank is very mixed so many different races living here and everyone gets along and no racism occurs.
There isn't much racism here in Burbank or at Reavis High School. There is some but not allot. Some people here in Reavis don't like a certain race of kids that go here. I know a few who don't like the Arabic people here because the way they act. They act obnoxious around everyone and they don't care what teachers tell them. Thats not all but that's a few of them. Other then that there isn't really any racism at all, we all get along very well. We have different race groups on teams and they get along well.
I agree with Julia about sounding racist, you said "there isn't much racism" and after that you concluded that "arabic people act obnoxious" but there is always those who act obnoxious doesn't matter what race they are.
I agree Cody , people are not so much worry about their race now , its more a behavior judgment now and I think you always have a few bad apples that ruin it for the bunch .
It's hard for me to compare Burbank to Odessa. Burbank may have a few people that are racist, but Odessa seems to be a racist community in general. Most of the people there look down on anyone who isn't white. Burbank on the other hand seems to be a lot more fair and everyone is more equal. Reavis doesn't have many African american students, but there is a lot of Arabic and Mexican students. The school still seems to be very equal and pretty much everyone treats each other the same.
Burbank and Reavis High School are not racist, especially when being compared to a town like Odessa and Permian High School. There is not much racism in Burbank. Burbank is a very diverse city with a plethora of different races. People here are very accepting of others. A similarity might be that Odessa probably didn't have a lot or any African American teachers, and Reavis also doesn't have any African American teachers.
It is very hard to compare Burbank and Reavis to Odessa and Permian. It is hard because we live in totally different times. We live in a time today where we are supposed to accept everyone for who they are. Back then when this story took place it was normal to be racist. People used the word "nigger" very frequently and without any hesitation. Whether adults believe it or not the way kids say "nigga" now is totally different then the way people at Permian at that time meant it. Kids say it now not to describe an African American but anybody, it is a common word used that can describe someone as something bad OR good. The way people in Odessa used it was always in a negative way. That is the only comparison I could find between Burbank/Reavis and Odessa/Permian.
Burbank and Reavis High School is nothing like Odessa and Permia when it comes to racism. The major difference is that our school and community contains many different minorities. Another thing is the different time periods which take place. Back then it was normal to call person a n but even though people today still use it here and there it's not morally acceptable like it was bak then. Today, we treat each other with respect because the ideology of people has changed.
I believe that there is racims all around the world. Reavis High School doesnt have a lot of racis people, theres only a few. We live in a place where there is a lot of people from different parts of the world and different nationalities. We all seem to get along pretty well. Burbank and Odessa have no similarities.
You could compare somethings to Permian in Reavis high school , like the lunch room for example , and how certain races sit with one and another most of the time , and some individuals dont like other ethics , based on that ethic behavior. There isnt alot of racism in Reavis high school , due to the fact that most relationships in the school are either within the same race or a totally different oppsite race and everyone accpets that person's desision . I tend to think that majority of the racism is done in the south.
I think Permian high school and Reavis are very different. Although there are some racist people at Reavis there are way more racist people at Permian. Now a days people are not as racist because we where raised in a society where there was no segregated schools. On the other hand, Permian was all about segregation because that was what was normal in that time. Another difference is that their football team is great unlike ours.
I been at Reavis High School since junior year and wow I'm so impressed whit the teachers here, there amazing and so we'll equipped whit knowledge. Teachers at RHS actually focus on the students listen to what they have to say correct them in a nice way if required but only for the better of the student. Teachers help I and my fellow peers so much they offer ram and inclass help, which is my personal qualities teachers at RHS have so helpful. They give us the right knowledge we need they don't beat around the bush give us the knowledge we need which is very helpful. They have special classes like communications which prepare a student for future cases of speaking publicly and important interviews. So Reavis High School is doing plenty of great things to prepare us for the future and after high school

ReplyDeleteThat's right we can't compare the old Odessa to the new Burbank. We can better compare the two towns if we knew how people lived in Odessa now.
DeleteJosh I disagree, there is some racism going on in Burbank. It may be little, but there is some.

ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you Peter! They lived in a whole different time period than we and a lot has changed for the better i believe.
DeleteI agree with your statement Piotr about Odessa and Burbank how we are different from them

ReplyDeleteThat's
DeleteJosh i wouldn`t say everybody is treated with respect but i believe a lot more people are now hen back then.,
DeleteI diss agree with the n word josh now a days people use it for everything
DeleteI do agree with you josh but nancy is right, people use the N word in normal conversation now a days.
DeleteI agree with Marisela, even though people still use the N-word its meaning is different than back then.

Deletei agree with that people are racist here but no were nearly as bad at odessa.
